Maxwell House coffee is now owned by the Kraft General Food . It is named in honor of a well-known hotel, the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. It has for many years until the late 1980s the largest-selling coffee in the U.S. and is second behind Folgers (2007), which is manufactured by Procter & Gamble.
A grocer in the neighborhood named Joel Cheek served the coffee at the Maxwell House. the coffee for the Maxwell House was blended by Mr. Cheek. Tragically in 1961, the original Maxwell House burned to the ground . However in 1970, in a few miles away from the original site, another Maxwell house was rebuilt. At this time a permission from the Kraft General Foods, which owns the rights to the name must be obtained.
In addition, a mansion on the outskirts of Nashville from the proceeds of the sales of the Cheek-Neal coffeehouse, the birthplace of the Maxwell House coffee was built by Joel Cheek. Cheekwood, the name of the mansion, was later donated to the people of Tennessee and is currently utilized as a botanical garden and an art gallery.
The Kraft General foods has successfully marketed the Maxwell House coffee from no where, and now is a well known coffee brand which offers many successful variations.
